How to Find the Proper Help
A.I.M. provides a great service. But, sometimes Face to Face counseling is necessary. To have individual attention for an hour or 45 minutes, can be a great help. We recommend seeing a licensed psychologist and/or social worker. For medication, we advise you see a psychiatrist. Obtain at least three or more names and call all of them. Ask them if they have worked with anxiety disorders and how long. What approach do they use? (Hopefully it is a behavioral/cognitive approach) What has been their success rate? How much do they charge? Besides finding out some basic information, what you are trying to do is get a gut feeling as to whether you like this person. You are investing a lot of money, so shop around.
We offer these recommendations to getting qualified help: The therapist or doctor must be licensed. It would be nice if they specialize in anxiety disorders, but if not, that they take special interest in this field. But the greatest therapist is somebody who has suffered with this condition and has recovered and has gone on to get their degree in counseling. There are not of lot of these kind of therapists, but more and more. After your first visit, ask yourself if you were comfortable (hard to decipher when you have anxiety) and if you left with hope.
